Feature: ALLEN TOUSSAINT
Legendary New Orleans piano player, songwriter, musician, arranger and producer, Allen Toussaint is heading to Australia for the first time. He is touring with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Jon Cleary and Tower of Power – don’t miss this lineup @ The Caloundra Music Festival 7th – 9th October!
Born in New Orleans 73 years ago, Toussaint began learning piano at seven, inspired by Professor Longhair; his style later grew to include elements of Fats Domino, Huey “Piano” Smith and Ray Charles. At 17 Earl King asked him to fill in for Huey “Piano” Smith, then he subbed for Fats on a recording session. Dave Bartholomew used him regularly after that.
In 1960, Toussaint was hired as A&R man for the brand new Minit label, where he truly came into his own. His first national success as a producer came with Jessie Hill’s “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” & the hits kept coming with Ernie K-Doe’s “Mother In Law” & Benny Spellman’s “Fortune Teller” (covered by The Rolling Stones and Australia’s The Throb). His singular touch on all these records redefined the sound of New Orleans R&B for the next decade.
In 1965, Toussaint teamed up with Marshall Sehorn to form SanSu Enterprises, and hired The Meters as house band. The innumerable classic recordings he wrote and produced by artists from his hometown – Lee Dorsey, Betty Harris, Dr. John, Chris Kenner & Earl King, led to a stream of international performers coming to record at Sea-Saint Studios during the 1970’s. Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Little Feat, Robert Palmer, Bonnie Raitt were among his clients.
Toussaint rarely left New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina, but when forced to go to New York City, he teamed up with old friend Elvis Costello and returned to The Big Easy to record “The River In Reverse” (first recording @ Piety Street Studios following the disaster). Together they toured internationally with all the musicians on the album. Allen Toussaint is becoming far better known as a result. His songs continue to be recorded by other artists and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ version of “Fortune Teller” featured on the ‘Raising Sand’ album.
