It's the roaring 20’s, prohibition is in full swing but that hasn’t stopped the wild parties in secret locations. The grog they made wasn’t fantastic but they made up for it with fabulous music and dancing.
Tonight we’ll be heading back to the 1920’s, I’ll be giving you party tips to help you throw your own 20’s style party plus recipes for a Manhattan cocktail and a Champagne cocktail. The music will be everything from big band to electro swing – let’s get started.
Champagne Cocktail – this is a simple one
Put a sugar cube on a plate and saturate it with some bitters and pop it in champagne glass
Now this step is optional - add ½ an oz of brandy or cognac to the glass
Next fill the glass with chilled champagne or sparkling wine.
And finally add a twist of lemon as a garnish.
Great Gatsby cocktail
Add green chartreuse instead of bitters to the sugar cube
And add a lime twist
Manhattan cocktail
Mixing glass fill with ice then add
1 oz of Sweet varmoth
3 dashes of bitter
2 oz Rye whiskey
stir it gently to make sure its fully chilled
then strain into a well chilled martini glass
garnish with a maraschino cherry
Tips for throwing a 20’s style party:
Fancy Dress it must be fancy dress, this will really help create the mood – think flappers and gangsters. Make sure you also have a box at the party filled with extra dress ups for the people who didn’t manage to pull something together.
Fully stocked bar set up to make loads of different classic cocktails – I like having a few cheat sheets with instructions on making 10 different cocktails so guest can make their own if you don’t have a bartender
The venue If you can hire a venue that is tucked away and difficult to find all the better – the original speakeasys were always in secret locations and you had to follow clues to be able to find it such as a painted blue dog sign out front of a warehouse. Oh, and a secret knock to get in would be pretty cool too
Decorations: make sure you set the mood when people walk in the door. you want to create the feeling of being in a hidden back room fill with glamous people and few glamourous touches
Photo booth Set up a gangster photo booth for mug shots, make sure you have plenty of props handy for the photos
Food Have plenty of canapés being served around the room all night
