The New South Wales government has released a new Housing 2041 strategy in response to the intensifying housing crisis across the state.
But here on the Northern Rivers, home to the state’s highest rates of regional homelessness, local political representatives are already expressing doubts about the impact of the strategy on the housing market and how it can help those in critical situations now.
Meanwhile, nominations for the Byron Shire Council elections in September continue to be announced, today we hear from Greens’ hopeful, Matthew O’Reilly, known to many long-term locals as ‘Cleva’.
While NSW failed to acknowledge Labor Day with a public holiday, let alone mark International Press Freedom day on the third of May, over the border in Brisbane calls for authorities to release detained WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange were heard at the annual Labor Day March. Dr John Jiggens brings us a report and we hear birthday messages of thanks and support from around the world for The Guardian in Outside the Bubble with Anny Reed.
