W.O.W. Wise Older Women Project: Part 2
The idea behind this CBF Grant Funded project is to challenge current narratives that continue to disadvantage many older women by failing to recognise the lifelong impacts of inequality, further compounded in later years.
This project offers a media platform for women aged 60-90 experiencing marginalisation through ageism, and other intersecting vulnerabilities. It focusses on enhancing these years, sharing personal and professional interviews, exploring older women's contributions and roles during this chapter of their lives so that society, in particular younger generations, will learn to value elders and themselves embrace the process of ageing.
The intention is to challenge societal conditionings that limit opportunities for older women by promoting strategies for inclusion.
My second guest in the series in Lilith Rocha. It’s almost impossible to describe Lilith as I feel no words could really do that justice. But I’ll give it a go.
Lilith Rocha is a flame haired swaying wahine goddess, who floats rather than walks and carries with her wherever she goes an aura of mystique and mystery, as I’m sure most people who see Lilith would ask themselves ….’ Who is that’?
Lilith resides right here in a tropical path of paradise and is in her eighty second year of life so it’s fair to say she has some stories – from an isolated young book worm christened with a very different name, who’s inspiration in the 1960’s’s was the first female comic her Sheena - Queen of the Jungle.
After swinging her way through the complicated and twisted vines of childhood and teens, Sheena made way for Lilith, model, poet, journalist and writer for magazines like Womens Weekly, Simply Living and Wellbeing Magazine to name a few. She has also written for Koori Mail and still produces a weekly astrology column in the Byron Echo which has run from 1991 until now. Lilith has also been a natural therapist and hula teacher, in fact she still has a troop – Mana Aloha who meet and dance every week in addition to a beginners class.
Eighty Two might not seem a particularly significant milestone to reach in the scope of ageing but when Lilith was told this would be her last year she started doing whatr she does best, planning a party, and making plans for her burial and farewell kneesup!
This interview is woven into a performance presentation Lilith recently gave at the Vagina Conversations something that Lilith can tell you more about as you sit back and prepare yourself to be taken on a journey into a wild and wonderous life. Shared here as part of the WOW project - Wise Older Women. I bring you Lilith Rochas.
